This summer, one of You Matter Appalachia’s three cohorts joined forces with Appalachia Reach Out (ARO) to serve families across the region through a hands-on partnership rooted in community and compassion.

The cohort spent the summer weeks alongside ARO volunteers, pitching in across several of the organization’s signature programs. Team members helped staff ARO’s summer feeding program, ensuring children in the area had access to nutritious meals during the school break.
They also supported Vacation Bible School, bringing energy and enthusiasm to youth programming that made a lasting impression on kids and families.

Beyond feeding and youth ministry, cohort members hit the road with ARO’s outreach teams, connecting with residents throughout the community and meeting people where they are. Perhaps most visibly, the partnership extended to home repair work — with cohort members rolling up their sleeves to help fix and restore homes for families in need.

“This kind of hands-on service is exactly what You Matter Appalachia is about,” said Courtney Walker, You Matter Appalachia director. “We’re grateful to ARO for welcoming our cohort and for the meaningful work we were able to do together and remind all people that they matter.”
The partnership reflects both organizations’ shared commitment to strengthening Appalachian communities from the ground up — one meal, one home, and one family at a time.
