The Martin County Health Department is excited to announce the launch of the YOU MATTER Appalachia Summer Internship Program. This summer, 37 interns ranging from high school students to early college students are participating in this unique opportunity designed to develop leadership skills, explore career pathways, and strengthen connections within the community.

Interns selected one of three specialized cohorts: Community Health & Wellness, Youth & Family Support, or Community Tourism & Development. Throughout the summer, participants will engage in hands-on learning experiences, community projects, professional development activities, leadership development, and mentorship opportunities led by local leaders and organizations.

The internship program is supported by dedicated community leaders and professionals who serve as cohort mentors throughout the summer.

Dorothy Dillon leads the Community Health & Wellness Cohort with support from Bailey Dials.

Kayla Corbiere leads the Youth & Family Support Cohort with support from Travis York and Leanna Muncy.

Eric Mills leads the Community Tourism & Development Cohort with support from Thomas Ray and Justin Maynard.

Together, these leaders provide guidance, mentorship and hands-on learning opportunities designed to help interns grow both personally and professionally.

The YOU MATTER Appalachia Internship Program was created to invest in the next generation of leaders by providing real-world experiences that help students develop confidence, communication skills, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of the opportunities available within their own communities.

By connecting young people with local professionals and community organizations, the program encourages participants to explore career opportunities while building meaningful relationships and leadership skills.

As the program begins its first year, the Martin County Health Department is proud to support these young leaders as they learn, grow and make a positive impact throughout Martin County and the Appalachian region.

The future of our community depends on investing in our youth, and the YOU MATTER Appalachia Internship Program is an exciting step toward developing the leaders of tomorrow.
