Norfolk Southern train derails near Crum

CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

CRUM, W.Va. — A Norfolk Southern train jumped the tracks Friday night in southern Wayne County.

Eighteen cars derailed from the tracks.

The Kermit Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched around midnight to the scene on Webb Road.

Firefighters arrived to find no injuries, property damage or hazardous leaks, according to Kermit firefighter Billy Davis.

“I’m really glad there was no leak because the derailment wasn’t far from the river,” Davis said. “With the river already being up, it would have been hard to keep it from getting in the water. That’s where many towns get their water.”

A Norfolk Southern representative told news sources that a rockslide caused the derailment at about 10 p.m.

“There are no reported injuries, no leaks and there is no danger to the public,” Norfolk Southern spokesperson Heather Garcia said. “Norfolk Southern personnel are on-site for cleanup.”

The train’s engine was not involved in the derailment.

The wreck happened on the southern end of Webb Road near Cassie Lane.

First responders cleared the scene by 1:30 a.m.

Authorities attributed the rockslide to rainy weather following a hard freeze.
