CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

INEZ — Authorities are investigating the tragic death of a 6-day-old infant who was found unresponsive Saturday morning at a home in Martin County.

Martin County Coroner Chris Todd said he was called to a residence on Little Laurel Creek Road in Inez at 7:15 a.m. He pronounced the infant dead at 8:12 a.m.

“It’s very sad,” Todd said.

Emergency radio traffic indicates that Martin County 911 Dispatch received a call at about 6:10 a.m. reporting that an infant was unresponsive and not breathing. The caller said CPR was being performed.

Dispatchers initially described the child over the radio as 5 days old. Todd later said she was 6 days old.

A cause of death—SIDS or otherwise—has not been determined.

Todd transported the infant’s body Sunday to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

“We don’t want to rule out anything until the autopsy is complete,” Todd said.

The Martin County Coroner’s Office, Kentucky State Police and Social Services are investigating.

Kentucky State Police Post 9 has not issued a statement.
