INEZ — Eastern Kentuckians with ideas for businesses that could solve problems in their communities have access to free coaching, mentorship and support through Shaping Our Appalachian Region’s Social Enterprise Accelerator.
Danna Barnett, director of Entrepreneurship with SOAR, and Zach Adams, with SOAR’s Social Enterprise Accelerator Program, spoke to the Kiwanis Club at its Thursday luncheon about the program and opportunities available.
The Social Enterprise Accelerator, or SEA, is designed for people who want to use business as a tool to address community needs such as childcare, housing, transportation and workforce development.
The program is open to both for-profit and nonprofit ventures. It welcomes participants at any stage, from someone exploring an idea to an established business. No previous business experience or completed business plan is required.
Applications for the fall 2026 cohort are due Aug. 15.
The 12-week hybrid program includes biweekly business coaching, one-on-one guidance, mentorship and networking opportunities.
Participants can expect to devote about two to three hours per week to virtual workshops and attend several in-person events.
The flyer that Barnett and Adams distributed at the luncheon lists Martin County among the eligible Eastern Kentucky counties.
Participants also receive help navigating potential funding opportunities, partnerships and other business resources. The SEA program does not award direct funding or grants, and funding is not guaranteed.
The cohort concludes with a Demo Day, where participants can present their businesses or ideas, discuss progress and connect with leaders.
SOAR works with organizations including the Appalachian Early Childhood Network, Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky and Center on Rural Innovation to provide mentorship and technical assistance.
Entrepreneurs who are not ready to join the fall cohort can request one-on-one coaching and technical assistance at any time throughout the year.
Participants also remain connected to the SEA network after completing the program through alumni opportunities, referrals and continued support.
The program is free through support from SOAR’s partners.
SOAR says its broader mission is to break down barriers to meaningful employment and help Eastern Kentucky residents create work that strengthens their communities and contributes to long-term regional prosperity.
