All Driver Licensing Regional Offices will be closed Thursday, June 4 and Friday, June 5 as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) launches a new driver licensing system that officials said will enhance the customer experience and expand online options.
Offices will reopen Monday, June 8.
The new driver licensing system replaces Kentucky’s nearly 40-year-old platform. Officials said it is part of continued efforts to modernize state services and improve the customer experience.
The upgraded system will launch alongside myDrive, a new online driver services portal that allows residents to pre-apply for a license, permit or ID, request a card replacement, check their current license standing and more.
Transportation Secretary Rebecca Goodman said the upgrade marks a significant step in modernizing state services.
“We’re excited to roll out new services to better serve Kentuckians and modernize how we do business for decades to come,” Goodman said. “As with any new system, there will be an adjustment period for both our teams and customers, so we encourage anyone with upcoming licensing needs to visit an office before the temporary closure if possible.”
Goodman encouraged residents to register for a myDrive account at mydrive.ky.gov once the portal becomes available June 8. Creating an account early can save time later as account verification may require some users to request a secure verification code that will arrive by mail.
The cabinet also encourages anyone taking a road or written test with the Kentucky State Police to complete a license or permit pre-application through myDrive before their appointment.
To support the transition, KYTC announced several temporary service changes.
- Driver Licensing Regional Offices will close June 4 and 5 and reopen June 8.
- Through June 18, offices will offer walk-in service from 8 a.m. to noon.
- Monthly Saturday service will resume in July.
- The cabinet will also discontinue the MyCDL portal for uploading medical certificates at 5 p.m. June 3.
- Online driver’s license renewal services will go offline June 3 and return June 8. Drivers who renew online will still need to submit a completed vision screening form.
Residents can find additional information about office hours, services and the new myDrive portal at drive.ky.gov.
