INEZ — One Lady Cardinal is preparing for her next challenge both on and off the court.
Martin County High School basketball player Angelina Moore recently signed a contract to join the Kentucky Army National Guard, taking the next step toward a future built around service, education and helping others.
The daughter of Jessica and James Moore, she said her decision to enlist came from a desire to serve and a growing interest in the opportunities the National Guard could provide.
“I joined the National Guard because it genuinely piqued my interest and I’d like to help my nation where I can,” she said.
Moore enlisted as a 92Y, or Unit Supply Specialist, and will serve with the 201st Engineer Battalion. She is scheduled to leave for basic training and advanced individual training this summer.
While the transition from high school athletics to military life will bring new challenges, Moore believes the lessons learned through basketball and sports competition have prepared her well.
“I do believe that some experiences in my sports background will help me along in my journey, not just for physical reasons but because of what I have learned,” she said. “I’ve learned how to handle criticism in high-intensity situations and how to work as a team instead of an individual.”
Her coaches and teammates have watched those qualities develop throughout her athletic career at Martin County. Teamwork, discipline and perseverance have been key parts of the Lady Cardinals program.
Beyond her military service, Moore also has plans to continue her education after high school. She hopes to major in psychology and minor in sociology before pursuing a career as a psychologist, potentially working in a school setting.
The National Guard will assist the future soldier with her tuition and provide stipends to help her attend college.
With graduation approaching and a new chapter set to begin, Moore said she is looking forward to the opportunities and experiences as she balances military service with her long-term career goals.
