Cardinals drop three on the road

The Martin County Cardinals faced a difficult week on the diamond, falling in three road contests against Powell, Morgan County and Hazard to close out the regular season.

Powell County 10, Martin County 0 (5 innings)

Powell County held the Cardinals to just one hit, handing Martin a 10-0 loss May 11 at Powell County.

Caige Presley accounted for Martin County’s lone hit, finishing 1-for-2 with a .500 batting average in the contest.

On the mound, junior Tyler Stacy got the start and pitched two innings. He allowed five runs (three earned) on two hits while striking out three and walking two over 57 pitches.

Eighth-grader Skyler Green worked 2.2 innings in relief. He surrendered five runs (only one earned) on three hits with one strikeout and two walks over 46 pitches.

Morgan County 5, Martin County 4

Martin County bounced back with a much stronger offensive showing May 12 but came up short in a 5-4 loss at Morgan County.

The Cardinals collected five hits, led by young Gunner Broaddus, who went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a .333 batting average.

Senior Hunter Moore turned in one of Martin County’s best all-around performances of the week. Moore finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored, drew a walk and posted a .500 batting average at the plate while also pitching a complete game.

From the mound, Moore allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits. He struck out five and walked one over seven innings on 86 pitches.

Presley continued his strong week with two runs scored and a .333 batting average.

Gavin Grace finished 1-for-3 with a .333 average. Senior Dylan Spence went 1-for-2 in the contest.

Hazard 16, Martin County 1

Hazard collected 16 hits and scored 11 runs in the second inning to break the game open early May 15.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals recorded three hits in the contest. Moore, Blake Stacy and Tyler Stacy each finished with a hit for Martin County.

Moore also scored the Cardinals’ lone run, while T. Stacy drove in Martin County’s only RBI.

The Bulldogs struck early with four runs in the opening inning before exploding for 11 more in the second.

Green started on the mound for Martin County. He allowed four runs on seven hits over 1-2/3 innings. Aidan Mann worked one inning in relief and struck out a Bulldog.
