WARFIELD — The Warfield City Commission accepted the resignation of a commissioner, appointed Jeff Ward to fill the vacant seat and approved plans for a new community garden during its meeting Thursday.

Commissioners also heard from a county tourism official about plans for a Warfield Liberty Celebration.

Ward was appointed to serve on the commission following Jamie Queen’s resignation.

Commissioners welcomed a proposal by Lauren Traitz, an agriculture and agroforestry consultant, to develop a community garden in the city.

Traitz, who previously lived and worked in Martin County before recently relocating to Estill County, is using a $5,000 Appalachian Kentucky Civic Experiment grant to launch her “Common Roots Pilot,” which will include Warfield.

Commissioners also agreed to seek estimates on repairs to the air conditioning unit at Horizon Recovery.

Katrina Sansom of the Martin County Tourism Commission updated commissioners on plans for the Warfield Liberty Celebration scheduled for June 13.

“I was just following up where Nita [Collier] and I came a few months ago and talked about different projects in the area,” Sansom said. “We were talking about doing a festival-type thing here again. Several of us have talked and made a lot of plans. We want to call it the Warfield Liberty Celebration.

“I’m trying to get some things done in town, you know, to bring attention to town, but the majority of it will be at the park.”

Sansom said the event will include a car show, parade and pageant.

She also asked the city to assist with raffling a wall hanging and table runner donated by Marci’s Quilt Studio.
