MAYTOWN — A Floyd County woman died Sunday after an apparent dog attack along Railroad Street in the Maytown community, authorities said.

The woman, believed to be in her 60s, was found unresponsive in the roadway shortly before 3 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.

Her name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Sheriff John Hunt said deputies responded Sunday afternoon to a report of an injured, unresponsive elderly woman lying in the roadway.

Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson was called to the scene and pronounced the woman dead.

According to the coroner, the dog involved was a German Shepherd belonging to another individual. Authorities have not released details about what led to the attack. However, they said the dog was removed from the scene by Floyd County Animal Control.

The woman’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

The investigation remains ongoing.
