MAYTOWN — A Floyd County woman died Sunday after an apparent dog attack along Railroad Street in the Maytown community, authorities said.

Cynthia “Cindy” Patton Prater was found unresponsive in the roadway shortly before 3 p.m., according to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.

Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson responded and pronounced Prater dead at the scene.

According to the coroner, the dog involved was a German Shepherd belonging to another individual.

Hunt later told WYMT that surveillance video captured the incident. He said Prater and the dog were walking along the street when the dog suddenly knocked her down and began a vicious attack.

Hunt said the dog was familiar to Prater and that neighbors had confirmed that the two often walked together.

Prater’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

The dog was euthanized shortly after the attack, Hunt said. Its remains are being preserved for a necropsy to determine whether a medical condition may have triggered the attack.

The investigation remains ongoing.
