Free waste tire drop-off April 18 in Mingo County

West Virginia residents will have a free opportunity to dispose of old tires as part of Mingo County’s countywide cleanup campaign.

Friends of the Tug Fork River announced it will open its free waste tire disposal trailer Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Williamson Water Plant parking lot, 317 E. Third Ave., Williamson.

The event is open to West Virginia residents only.

According to the announcement, residents may bring up to 10 tires per person for free disposal.

Tires must be off the rim.

Only car and light truck tires will be accepted.

No business or tire dealer tires will be accepted.

Friends of the Tug Fork River encouraged residents to bring tires from their garages, properties or neighborhoods for proper disposal to help clean up the community.

The nonprofit also issued a strong reminder that tires should not be left at the site when the trailer is closed.

“Please remember this service is provided by a nonprofit organization to help our community,” the organization said in its announcement. “We are responsible … for all tires loaded on the trailer. Do not leave tires at the location when it is not open to accept them.”

The group said unauthorized dumping has been a problem in the past and could threaten the future of the free program.

Event sponsors include Friends of the Tug Fork River, the City of Williamson, REAP, the Mingo County Solid Waste Authority and Veolia Water.
