INEZ — Martin County’s top young wordsmiths gathered Thursday in the Martin County High School auditorium for the School District Spelling Bee to compete for district honors.
When the final word was spelled, Paige Stafford of Eden Elementary, a sixth-grader, claimed first place and the title of district spelling bee champion.

Kennedy Mills, an eighth-grader at Martin County Middle School, earned second place.

Remy Williams of Eden Elementary, a fourth-grader, finished third.

Kinlee Fletcher of Eden Elementary, a fifth-grader, placed fourth.

Rounding out the top 5, Emma Nichols of Warfield Elementary, a fifth-grader, earned fifth place.

Following the competition, Schools Superintendent Larry James presented trophies to the top finishers.
The annual competition remains one of the district’s favorite academic traditions, giving students a chance to test their skills and celebrate the hard work that goes into mastering the written word.
