TOMAHAWK — A narrow one-lane bridge over Rockhouse Fork in Tomahawk that officials say is unsafe for emergency vehicles is slated for replacement at no cost to Martin County.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet notified Martin County Judge/Executive Lon Lafferty in a letter that the Mollett Branch bridge “has been awarded for replacement.”
The project will replace the aging structure, which inspection records show is structurally deficient and in poor overall condition. Because of its limitations, heavier vehicles must avoid the crossing.
Lafferty said the bridge functions as a single-lane crossing carrying two-way traffic, creating safety and access concerns for the residents who rely on it.
“It’s not safe for emergency vehicles or larger vehicles to pass,” Lafferty said. “The new bridge, we understand, will be wider and sturdier. It is certainly going to improve the quality of the residents’ lives, being able to access the services that they currently can’t.”
Lafferty said the state inspects and ranks bridges in consultation with county officials.
“We’re very pleased with the state’s decision to fund the bridge,” he said. “This will be a tremendous benefit to the people living there. We’re appreciative.”
The judge noted the Mollett Branch Bridge is not the only county crossing in need of attention.
“There is a bridge on Emily Creek in dire need of repairs,” said Lafferty. “We have many older bridges—and even a concrete bridge will not last forever.”
The state will fund the project in full.
