October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

BY DOROTHY DILLON

Each October, communities across the nation come together to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time dedicated to spreading knowledge, encouraging screenings, and supporting those affected by the disease.

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women, but early detection can make all the difference. Regular screenings, such as mammograms, increase the chances of finding cancer early when treatment is most effective.

The Martin County Health Department encourages all women—especially those over the age of 40 or with a family history of breast cancer—to speak with their health care provider about screening options. Self-awareness is also vital; women should perform regular self-breast checks and report any changes to their provider.

By working together to prevent, promote and protect, we can help save lives through early detection and education. This October, wear pink, schedule your mammogram, and join us in raising awareness for breast cancer prevention and support.

For more information about local health services or upcoming screenings, contact the Martin County Health Department at 606-298-7752.
