John Arthur Fields Sr. Obituary

John Arthur Fields Sr.
1941—2024

John Arthur Fields Sr., “Preacher,” age 83, of Lowmansville, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 26, 2024.

He was born Jan. 19, 1941, in Laura to the late George and Myrtle Stanley Fields.

He married his loving wife and soulmate, Fern, on Dec. 15, 1961. Together they worked hard to raise their three children, teaching them about the love of Jesus and how to live a righteous life. As a living example of Jesus Christ, John preached the gospel as an ordained minister for over 60 years. During his time in ministry, he served as moderator, pastor, assistant pastor and clerk. With a soulful mountain voice, he sang praises to his King.

As a nature lover, John was an avid ginseng hunter. Some would even say he was the best ginseng harvester in Eastern Kentucky. In fact, he once dug a 10-ounce ginseng root. His time in the mountains was his sanctuary, where he felt closest to God. If the hills could talk, they would echo the many prayers he called out to God during his mountain adventures.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by two sisters, Amy Bailey and Italy Fields, and a daughter-in-law, Daphne Scruggs Fields.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Fern Maynard Fields of Lowmansville, one son, John Arthur (Cassie) Fields Jr. of Stamping Ground, two daughters, Vroncias (Arnold) Fletcher of Lowmansville and Kimberly (Brian) Fitch of Catlettsburg, and two sisters, Savannah Lowe of Ohio and Linda Dillon of Wayne, West Virginia. John is also survived by six grandchildren, Janice (J.D.) Marcum of Catlettsburg, Zachary (Josie) Fletcher of Lowmansville, Laken (Jake) Hammon of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Landon Fitch of Catlettsburg, George Fields and John Robert Fields, both of Stamping Ground, and three great-grandchildren, Kinslee Marcum, Miles Hammon and Casey Fletcher.

John was a faithful member of the River Baptist Church in River, where he once served as assistant pastor.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024, at the River Baptist Church with Elder Terry Howell officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Crum Funeral Home of Inez.
