Tug Valley downs Martin County, Tolsia in baseball action

NAUGATUCK, W.Va. — The Tug Valley Panthers swept a doubleheader Saturday beating Martin County and Tolsia at Don Spence Field.

Martin County took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Damian Cheek.

Tug Valley answered in the bottom of the frame with singles by Conner Lackey and Dakota Ooten. A ground-out by Elijah Fluty and a passed ball helped the Panthers score four runs and take a 4-1 lead.

Tug Valley added to its lead in the bottom of the third on a triple by Ooten. Ooten had three RBIs in the game. The Panthers plated three more runs to take a 7-2 lead.

The Cards added a run in the top of the sixth, while the Panthers tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of that frame.

Gage Whitt picked up the mound win for Tug Valley and Aiden Horn took the loss for the Cardinals.

The Panthers smacked nine hits in the contest.

Cheek had a hit and a pair of RBIs for Martin County. Brock Messer and Ryan Stephens also had hits for the Cards.

Julian Vance pounded out three hits to lead Tug Valley to an 11-1 lead over sectional rival Tolsia. Two of Vance’s hits were triples. He also stole three bases in the game.

Vance got the win on the mound for the Panthers. Ashton Smith came on in relief for Coach Teddy Hall’s squad.

Tug Valley scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Panthers added to the lead as Austin Smith got an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the third inning. The Panthers scored two more runs in that frame.

Jeremy VanHoose took the loss on the hill for the Rebels.

Ashton Smith had two hits for Tug Valley.

The Panthers wore their special National Guard uniforms Saturday for the doubleheader.

Tug Valley was slated to travel to Lincoln County on Monday and to Logan on Tuesday. They will host Huntington St. Joe on Wednesday.
