Cardinals tennis opens season

SALYERSVILLE — The Martin County boys and girls tennis teams, led by head coach Josh Penix, got their season underway March 12 against the Magoffin County Hornets in Salyersville. Martin County boys defeated Magoffin County by a score of 4-1 in set play, while the girls were outplayed 4-1.

Connor Dials, the No. 1 seed, claimed victory with a set score of 8-4. Following suit, Bryon Marcum, the No. 2 seed, dominated with a score of 8-1, while Bryson Dials, the No. 3 seed, won easily with a score of 9-2.

In doubles, No. 2 seed Corey Endicott and Shawn Marcum dominated the Hornets 8-0, while No. 1 BJ Parsley and Levi Howell suffered an 8-2 defeat.

In extra set play, Liam May and Caden Mann defeated the Hornets 7-6 (7-5), Chase Hinkle and Aiden Copeland fell short with a score of 6-2, and Drew Wilson and Cole Damron faced a 4-0 loss.

Girls No. 2 seed Caitlyn Horn won 8-2, No. 1 seed Tamara Workman lost her set 8-0, and No. 3 seed Hailey Damron faced a close 9-8 defeat.

No. 1 seed Hailey Damron and Ashdon Kerr lost in girls doubles 8-1, while the No. 2 seed Aaliyah Cline and Katie Maynard lost 8-4.

In extra set play, Tamara Workman and Caitlyn Horn secured a 6-0 victory, Chloe May and Addison Kerr won 4-1, and Addison Kerr and Ashdon Kerr won 4-3. Chloe May and Addison Kerr fell short 7-2.
