INEZ — Martin County head baseball coach Wesley Hager has accepted the head football coach position at Prestonsburg High School.

PHS Principal Ricky Thacker made the announcement Monday.

“His passion for football, commitment to player development, and deep-rooted connection to Prestonsburg High School make him the ideal candidate to lead our football program into a new era of excellence,” Thacker said in a press release, asking the community to join in welcoming the 2017 PHS graduate and former Mr. Blackcat. “We look forward to witnessing the positive impact he will undoubtedly make on our students, athletes and community.”

Hager was named head baseball coach at Martin County High School in January 2022. He has taught seventh-grade math teacher at Martin County Middle School for the past four years, where he was head coach of the football team. He was also an offensive coordinator for the high school football team.

The coach’s departure leaves vacancies in the Martin County School District. Baseball practice opened Feb. 12 and the Cardinals are scheduled to play Cincinnati Christian (Fairfield, Ohio) March 16. They are scheduled March 21 to host Phelps.

Martin County High School athletic director Chuck White confirmed Monday that he will serve as interim baseball coach for the Cardinals.
