Lady Cards dominate Tug Valley in Zip Zone Classic

INEZ — Martin County Lady Cards dominated Tug Valley 76-26 in the Zip Zone Classis held Saturday at Martin County High School.

The Lady Cards took the floor in front of a packed gymnasium. The scrimmage served as a preview of the Lady Cards’ upcoming season.

The Lady Cards unveiled new shooting shirts to honor the memory of MCHS’s late Principal Brian Charles.

The Lady Cards set the tone by scoring 25 points in the first quarter and holding Tug Valley to six points. Martin County had a dominating 47-9 lead at halftime.

The Lady Cards reset the score for a portion of the game and let the JV Lady Cards take the court.

Hall of Fame Coach Robin Harmon-Newsome deployed different lineups, showing versatility and depth within the team.

Five Lady Cards players achieved double figures.

Senior Katie Marcum scored a game-high 19 points for Martin County, senior Laken Williams followed with 15, senior Kennadi Mollett finished with 12, senior Alyssa Allen netted 11, and eighth-grader Maci Maynard finished with 10. Chloe May contributed five points, and Brooke Marcum and Angelina Moore chipped in two each.

Makenzie Browning led Tug Valley with 12 points, Bailee Hall scored seven, Katelynn Richardson added four, Haven Deskins chipped in three, and Brooke Spaulding made a free-throw for one.

Martin County Coach Robin Newsome was pleased with the results.

“We shared the ball and had a lot of assists,” Newsome said.

The Lady Cards officially kicked off their season at home Tuesday, Nov. 28, against Menifee County. Results were not available by press time.
