WINCHESTER —After solid performances in the 11th Region tournament, Martin County High School’s Kenadie Evans and Jake James took their turn last week in the first round of the KHSAA State Golf Tournament. The event spanned two days, the girls being held Sept. 25 and the boys Sept. 26  at the Winchester Country Club.

Evans teed off at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 25. She navigated the challenging course and completed her round with a commendable score of 92. Her performance placed her in a tied 42nd position out of a competitive field of 80 golfers.

Although she fell short of the cut-off score of 83 to advance to the state tournament in Bowling Green, Evans valued the opportunity.

“This was a great experience and something to build on,” Evans commented. “It will only make me better for next season.”

The following day, James represented Martin County in the boys first round. He had earned his spot by shooting an 81 in the 11th Region tournament and placing in the top 10 in the region.

Despite facing challenges during his round, James displayed composure, ultimately finishing with a score of 89.

Martin County coach Boo Newsome stated Evans has a promising future. She also praised James for his outstanding season, which included playing in numerous events across the state and securing several college golf offers.

“The competition at the semi-state level is exceptionally tough,” said Newsome.

Lexington Christian’s Christy Ann Carter ultimately won with a score of 4 under 68.

Warren Thomis from Madison Central won the boys tournament with a score of 5 under 67.
