Martin County finished the last week of the soccer season with two wins on the road. The Lady Cards defeated Letcher County Central by a 7-2 score Sept. 25 and St. Joseph High School 9-0 Thursday.

With the wins, the Lady Cards improved to 16-3, earning the regular season title and entering the Super Region Tournament ranked first.

Martin County will take on the winner of Shelby Valley and Paintsville at 6 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 5) at home, which will serve as senior night.

“It’s been a great season for these girls and our program,” Martin County coach Steven Gauze said. “A lot of records are being broken, but we are not done yet. I hope we can get the community out to support us during the Super Region Tournament. Late in the game, when they are tired and hurting, the crowd cheering you on makes such a difference.”

Below is a recap of last week’s action:

Martin County beat Letcher County Central in a meeting at home earlier in the season. Due to recent injuries, the Lady Cards were without the services of top-scorer Laura Hale, whose return date remains uncertain. The Lady Cards took some time to adjust to their new tactics but got on track shortly before halftime to lead 2-0.

The Lady Cards turned up the offensive pressure in the second half to come home with the victory.

Faith Caldwell led the attack with four goals, Sophie McCoy followed with two and Addison Duncan scored a PK.

Martin County crossed the border to St. Joseph High School in Huntington, West Virginia, Thursday. The Lady Cards could do no wrong in the first half of the game, scoring seven goals by halftime.

St. Joseph appeared frustrated and struggled to keep up with the pace of the game.

The game looked like it would end early in the second half, but St. Joseph recovered at halftime and came out in the second half ready to put up a fight. Martin County managed to add two more goals in the second half to finish the game and their regular season with a victory.
