INEZ — Martin County Lady Cards had a busy week preparing for the Elite 8 round in the All “A” Classic State Tournament.
On Thursday the team traveled to Paintsville for their final Super Region game. Martin County looked sharp against Paintsville, defeating the Tigers easily 13-0.
Before the game Thursday, the Lady Cards visited all the elementary and middle schools in the county, with each school showing their support for the Lady Cards.
The team traveled to Louisville Friday, but not before a big send-off from Martin County High School students, staff and county leaders showing their support as well.
On Saturday, the Lady Cards took the field at Louisville Assumption Green Sports & Education Complex against University Heights High School. On paper, the two teams had very similar records and stats, so the game looked to be a close one.
From the kickoff, Martin County went on the attack with forward Laura Hale leading the way. The Lady Cards moved the ball well and had four shots on goal in the first half but could not find the back of the net. Martin County’s defense was up to the challenge from University Heights, holding the opponent to only two shots on goal by halftime.
The first half was very fast-paced but ended with the teams tied at zero.
The second half saw University Heights come out with more energy and offensive pressure on Martin County. Just four minutes into the half, University Heights was able to get past the Lady Cards defense and take the lead 1-0. The Lady Cards responded by pushing the ball forward and getting more shots on goal.
Martin County fought till the final whistle but could not score a goal.
The game ended with a loss for Martin County 1-0.
“I’m very proud of the team and how they played today,” Martin County coach Steven Gauze said. “They were not nervous or intimidated by University Heights and played well. All I can ask is they give everything they have to win the game, and they did that today. I hate to lose, but still making it to the Elite 8 is a great accomplishment for our program.”
The Lady Cards drop to 14-3 on the season and finish regional play undefeated.
The team will finish the season on the road this week. The Lady Cards were at Letcher Central on Monday and will head to St. Joseph in Huntington on Thursday.
The Super Region tournament will begin on Oct. 4. However, the schedule was unavailable at press time.
