PAINTSVILLE — The Martin County High School golf team marked their presence in the Paintsville Invitational Tournament held Saturday at the Paintsville Country Club. Senior Jake James led the team with an impressive score of 84, earning him a spot among the top 15 competitors.

James was not alone in representing the Cardinals. He was joined by five of his teammates: Drew Wilson, Avery Duncan, Knox Maynard, Dylan Hale and Ryder Duncan.

The event marked the team’s last regular season tournament, as the 11th Region tournament is underway this week at the Paintsville Country Club. The girls’ leg of the tournament kicked off Tuesday, with the boys’ competition slated for a Wednesday start.

Martin County coach Boo Newsome expressed his pride in the team’s participation.

“I am proud we could put a team in this event. This is where the regional will be held,” Newsome said.

The coach also pointed out the challenges many schools face in getting players to participate in golf.

“Most schools have a hard time getting players out for golf, but we have been blessed with several golfers this season.”

Coach Newsome is optimistic about the future of the team.

“My hope is to build off this momentum and be able to compete with the best teams in the state,” she added.
