MOREHEAD — Martin County High School senior Jake James competed in the Rowan County Eagle Trace Invitational tournament Sept. 2 at the Eagle Trace Golf Course in Morehead. James shot a respectable 2 over par 74, securing a spot inside the top 20 in a field of 174 skilled golfers across the state.

In addition to his impressive performance, James received two official collegiate offers.

On Tuesday, Aug. 29, he received an official offer from Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio, extended an offer Aug. 29. On Thursday, James earned an offer during an official visit to the University of Pikeville.

Martin County golf coach Boo Newsome, a UPike graduate who achieved All-American status in the sport, spoke highly of James.

“Jake is playing great golf at the right time,” Newsome said. “This late in the season is when you start dialing in your game and getting ready for All-A State and the regional tournament. Colleges are also starting to notice how good he is playing.”

Newsome further expressed her enthusiasm for the prospect of James joining the UPike family.

“UPike is my second home, and I loved every minute I spent there,” added Newsome. “UPike would be getting a great person, and James would be getting a good education and a competitive golf career if he chooses to go there.”

James’ next tournament is Saturday in the All-A State at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond.
