INEZ — Vincent Lawson, the salutatorian of Martin County High School’s class of 2023, delivered an insightful speech during the graduation ceremony May 26, 2023, at Cardinal Football Stadium, recognizing the importance of appreciation and continuous personal growth.

Lawson extended a warm welcome to the attendees, underscoring the significance of the occasion.

Lawson reflected on his upbringing by expressing his deep appreciation for the valuable life lessons his family members imparted, shaping him into the person he is today.

The salutatorian highlighted the contributions of his grandparents on both sides. From his paternal grandparents, Danny and Patty Lawson, he learned the importance of hard work and cultivating a strong mindset. On the maternal side, Robert and Estella Horn instilled in him the values of attentiveness and the power of education.

Lawson further credited his parents, Randy and Mandy Lawson, for expanding upon these lessons during his formative years. He also acknowledged the patience his sister, Ella, instilled in him and expressed gratitude to his extended family and friends, who played a significant role in shaping his character.

“This great melding of influences has made me into the man I am today, and it can’t be overstated just how appreciative I am to each and every individual who has taught me a lesson in life,” said Lawson.

The salutatorian urged everyone present to reflect upon and thank those who have touched their lives.

Addressing his classmates directly, Lawson emphasized the importance of embracing new connections and perspectives as they embark on their individual journeys.

“No matter what you do in life or what road you choose to take, do not be afraid to talk to and meet new people,” said Lawson.

Stressing that growth is fundamental to success and happiness in life, he underscored the need to learn from others and contribute to their growth.

“Tonight’s commencement is not a final step,” said Lawson. “It is a first step. So as we take this first step together, let us remember the people who supported us along the way by saying, ‘Thank you,’ and let us continue to grow by saying, ‘Nice to meet you,’ to the people we meet throughout life’s journey.”
