Nettie Gaye Newsome, 72, of Kermit, W.Va., went home to heaven Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., after a lingering illness.

Nettie was born July 12, 1950, in Mingo County, W.Va., one of eight daughters of the late Floyd and Louise (Rose) Newsome. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by four sisters, Violet Brewer, Delphia Fraker, Irene Pauley and Joan Maynard, and a very special brother-in-law, Lloyd Brewer.

The family would like to extend a very special thank-you to the caregivers she loved very much: Tasha Williams and Joyce Sturgell, whose care and attention allowed Nettie to stay in her own home.

Survivors include three sisters, Jewell Sammons of Kermit, W.Va., Garnet (Larry) Rigsby of China Grove, N.C., and her twin sister, Ellen Faye (Carlos) Fletcher, of Inez, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Nettie was a born-again Christian and was of the Church of God faith. She was a 1970 graduate of Kermit High School and was crowned Homecoming Queen during her time at Kermit High. She was a homemaker who enjoyed preparing meals and baking for her family.

Nettie was a caregiver in the family, always willing to help in times of need. She was someone you could always depend on. She enjoyed watching her TV shows and going shopping with her sisters. She found pleasure in the simple things in life. She was a beloved sister and adored by her nieces and nephews, who lovingly referred to her as “Aunt Gaye-Gaye.” She leaves behind many beautiful memories that will remain in our hearts and minds forever.
