PAINTSVILLE — Panic struck Friday morning in Paintsville as a shooter took three lives and fled the scene.

Police responded to a reported shooting at 10:40 a.m. on Depot Street, near Broadway, where three people were pronounced dead by the Johnson County coroner.

About an hour and a half later, the male shooter was apprehended on Greentown Lane after being shot once in the arm by a Kentucky State Police trooper. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where his condition was listed as stable.

Both Paintsville Independent and Johnson County school districts, near the site of the shooting, were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure on the advice of Johnson County Sheriff Doug Saylor. The lockdown was lifted after the shooter was taken into custody.

Police have not released the shooter or his victims’ names, but residents identified the shooter as Ronnie Pack, a former Johnson Central student and Paintsville resident.
