The school year is officially underway, and a lot is already happening at Martin County High School. From Cardinal football and a new journalism Facebook page to national recognition and former students finding success after graduation, there is plenty of Cardinal news to share.

Cardinals get ready for first home game

Football season is back, and the Cardinals are getting ready to take the field at home. After starting the season on the road, Martin County will play its first home game during Week 3 against Betsy Layne.

There is nothing quite like a Friday night under the lights, especially when the stands are full of Cardinal fans. Students, families and community members are encouraged to come out, wear red, white and blue, and cheer on the Cards. Pep Section theme will be Beach.

Let’s fill the stands and show Betsy Layne what Cardinal Country is all about.

MCHS Journalism has something new

The MCHS journalism class has some exciting things planned for this school year. Be on the lookout for our new Facebook page, where we will be sharing school news, pictures, announcements and more.

We will also be posting a biweekly broadcast covering what is happening around MCHS. The broadcast will give students a chance to hear about upcoming events, sports, student activities and other important news from around the school.

The journalism students are excited to bring something new to MCHS and give everyone another way to keep up with what is happening at our school.

Keep an eye out for the new Facebook page and make sure you follow us so you don’t miss a broadcast.

Pick and Bow could be heading to national TV

Some exciting national attention could be coming to Martin County. The MCHS Pick and Bow program has been asked to be featured on NBC’s “Today,” giving our students an incredible opportunity to showcase their talents to people across the country.

Pick and Bow gives students the opportunity to learn and perform traditional Appalachian music while helping keep an important part of our region’s culture alive. Being featured on a national television program would allow people from all over the country to see the talent of Martin County students and experience a piece of the Appalachian culture they represent.

This is more than just an exciting opportunity for the Pick and Bow program. It is a chance for our students, school and entire county to be recognized on a national level.

We are extremely proud of our Pick and Bow students and cannot wait to see them represent Martin County.

Cardinal Success: Hunter Moore

We also love hearing about former Cardinals doing great things after graduation.

Former MCHS student Hunter Moore recently received a job assignment that will take him to Missouri. Moore will be working at the Callaway Energy Center, where he will help maintain valves while the plant is shut down for six weeks.

Before heading to Missouri, Moore traveled to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he completed training to prepare for the job.

It is always exciting to see former MCHS students taking what they have learned and turning it into opportunities after high school. Moore’s hard work and training are helping him get an early start on what looks to be a bright future.

We cannot wait to see where his career takes him next.
