PIKEVILLE — Martin County volleyball got an early look at its 2026 squad Saturday during a preseason panorama at Shelby Valley High School.
The Lady Cardinals battled Phelps to a 45-45 tie at the end of the 35-minute varsity session and also lost to Pikeville.
First-year Martin County coach Kristen Isaac said the Lady Cards needed a little time to settle in before finding their rhythm.
“It went well,” Isaac said. “We started slow, but once they shook the nerves we played okay.”
With the regular season approaching, Isaac has already seen encouraging signs from a group continuing to adjust to a new system.
“Our energy and adaptability have honestly surprised me this early in the season,” Isaac said. “The girls have embraced changes and continued to compete with a lot of enthusiasm. We still have a few areas we need to improve, especially our blocking and tempo. As we continue to grow in those areas and build consistency, I believe it will take our game to the next level. I’m really excited about the potential this team has and how much we can continue to improve together.”
Martin County will lean on an experienced senior trio as the Lady Cardinals work toward those goals.
“My three seniors, Chloe Jude, Kambria Fluty and Sidney Gantt, have been tremendous leaders for us both on and off the court,” Isaac said.
“Their experience, work ethic, and leadership have been a huge asset to our team. Sophomore Reanna Johnson-Blevins and freshman Taylor Watts have also made a big impact, giving us a powerful offensive presence on the front row,” Isaac added. “I’m really proud of the way these girls have stepped up and embraced their roles, and I’m excited to see how all the girls continue to grow throughout the season.”
The Lady Cardinals open the regular season Aug. 17 on the road at Lawrence County before traveling to Floyd Central the following night.
Martin County will compete in the Champion of the Mountains at Pikeville on Aug. 22.
The Lady Cards make their home debut Aug. 24 when Lawrence County visits Martin County.
