Farm Bureau Cup set Aug. 13

PAINTSVILLE — Martin County wrapped up its preseason on a high note Saturday. The Lady Cards swept all three matches at the Johnson Central Soccerama to go 6-0 in scrimmages before the official debut.

The Lady Cardinals defeated East Carter 3-0, host Johnson Central 2-1 and Ashland 4-0 to finish the day 3-0 while outscoring their opponents 9-1.

Annaleigh Davis supplied the biggest scoring punch for Martin County. She found the back of the net five times across the three matches.

Faith Caldwell added four goals and two assists. She accounted for six scoring contributions on the day.

Hope Caldwell dished out two assists. Fellow Cardinal Jaz Jude chipped in another.

Saturday’s Soccerama put the finishing touches on Martin County’s preseason preparations. The strong showing allowed head coach Steven Gauze to experiment with his lineup before the games begin to count.

“The team played very well this weekend,” Gauze said. “We have played six scrimmages in preseason, which allowed me to try several formations and player combinations to see what works best. I thought all the girls played well against really good competition. Really looking forward to starting our season Tuesday at Ashland.”

The Lady Cardinals open the regular season Tuesday at Ashland before returning home for a three-game stretch. Martin County will host Paintsville in the Kentucky Farm Bureau Cup at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 13 and welcome Pike Central at 7 p.m. Aug. 15.

Martin County will then travel to Prestonsburg for a 6:30 p.m. matchup Aug. 18.
