INEZ — The Commonwealth’s attorney formally charged a Debord man with two drug offenses July 16 in Martin Circuit Court.

An information filed in the case charges Joshua Scott, 39, with possession of a controlled substance in the second degree, drug unspecified, and possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, drug unspecified.

The information alleges that Scott possessed a non-narcotic Schedule I or Schedule II controlled substance and a Schedule IV or Schedule V controlled substance April 20.

Circuit Judge John Kevin Holbrook scheduled Scott’s arraignment for Aug. 6.

Scott’s charges stem from an investigation that began April 16 when janitors at the Martin County Government Center found a yellow bag in a hallway and turned it over to Sheriff John Kirk.

Deputies reported that the bag contained three clear plastic bags. Two allegedly held a white powdery substance, while the third contained four round white pills.

Deputies also reported finding a clear glass jar containing a piece of paper towel and a white oval pill believed to be gabapentin.

After reviewing surveillance footage, deputies arrested Scott on Nichols Street on April 20.

An information is a formal charging document similar to an indictment. In this process, a defendant waives their right to a grand jury.

The charges are allegations and Scott is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
