A boy waits for the bus

BY JACK WARD

There’s an old story of the boy who stood on a sidewalk, waiting on a bus. A man walking by spotted the boy and gave him some gentle instruction.

“Son,” he said, “if you’re waiting on the bus, you need to move to the street corner. That’s where the bus stops for passengers.”

“It’s OK,” said the boy. “I’ll just wait right here, and the bus will stop for me.”

The man repeated his argument, but the boy never moved. Just then, the bus appeared. Amazingly, the bus pulled over to where the boy stood, and the child hopped on. The man on the sidewalk stood speechless. The boy turned around in the doorway and said, “Mister, I knew the bus would stop here, because the bus driver is my dad!”

When you’ve got a family relationship with the bus driver, you don’t need a bus stop. If your mother is a U.S. senator, you won’t need an appointment to slip into her office. If you’ve given your heart to the King of Kings, you’re in a royal family and you always have access to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

1 Peter 2:9: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

Robert Schuller, who had the “Hour of Power” program on TV for 40 years and built the Crystal Cathedral in California, never spoke about sin or the worthlessness of sinners. Instead, he talked about how God loves us and the value each of us has to God. He would say, “We are of infinite value to God, why else would He send His only begotten Son to die for us? If we are worthless why would God bother?”

Yes, we are vile and worthless sinners. Yes, man’s goodness is a filthy rag to God. And yes, there is none righteous, no not one, but then why did God bother to save us if we are so vile and worthless? Have we no value to Him?

Why did the bus driver stop for this one little boy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time? That was the bus driver’s son and he loved his son and would go out of his way for his beloved son. His son is of utmost importance and infinite value to him.

Why did God move heaven and earth to send Jesus to die for us? Here it is: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Yes, we are vile sinners in need of a Savior but one thing we must always remember: God absolutely loves us more than we could ever understand and we are of infinite value and importance to Him! Praise His name for the depth of the love He has for you and me.
