INEZ — Martin County residents will gather May 17 on the courthouse steps in Inez for a prayer event tied to the nation’s approaching 250th anniversary, joining similar observances planned in Washington and communities across the country.

The event, “Nation Rededication Back to God,” is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Martin County Courthouse and coincides with “Rededicate 250,” a national day of prayer and worship planned on the National Mall in Washington.

Local organizer Linda Lou Webb said the purpose of the Martin County gathering is to unite residents in prayer for the nation, state and community.

“We’re just joining in agreement with the national prayer, praise and worship,” Webb said.

The program will include remarks from Martin County Judge/Executive Lon Lafferty, praise music by The Journeymen and community prayer.

Webb said organizers hope the gathering will encourage reflection as America approaches its Semiquincentennial celebration.

“It will be a special time of prayer and unity,” Webb said. “So bring your flags, your red, white and blue, and show your patriotism.”

The event announcement includes a passage from 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray …”

Webb encourages churches, veterans, families, community leaders and residents across the county to attend.

The May 17 observance also carries historical significance. On May 17, 1776, before the Declaration of Independence was signed, the Continental Congress proclaimed a national day of fasting and prayer during the American Revolution.
