Police shoot man after struggle in downtown Paintsville

PAINTSVILLE — Kentucky State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Johnson County after Paintsville police shot a man following a foot chase and struggle downtown.

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. April 26 on Main Street, according to the Kentucky State Police.

Investigators said a Paintsville police officer was on foot patrol when he spotted a parked motorcycle matching the description of one reported stolen earlier. A short time later, the officer encountered Shawn Gayheart, 37, of Salyersville. Police said Gayheart ran a short distance before the officer caught up with him and a physical altercation followed.

A second Paintsville officer arrived to assist and both officers used Tasers in an attempt to subdue Gayheart, according to state police. When those efforts failed, the officers fired their service weapons, striking Gayheart.

Officers rendered aid at the scene until emergency medical personnel arrived.

Gayheart was taken to Pikeville Medical Center, where he remained in stable condition Sunday, police said.

Investigators recovered a knife and a firearm at the scene.

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team was requested by Post 9 in Pikeville to investigate the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
