INEZ — Martin County welcomed back a familiar and influential figure this past weekend as Olympian and Wheaton College Head Coach Jim Gruenwald returned for his second visit.

After first coming to Martin County last year, Gruenwald has continued building strong relationships with local athletes and students. His return was a continuation of something that is taking root within the program and the community.

Gruenwald began the weekend by speaking at the high school on Friday, sharing his message and connecting with students on a level beyond wrestling. His words reflected the mindset that has guided his life and career:

“Jesus Christ is life,” Gruenwald said. “The rest is just wrestling.”

On Saturday, Gruenwald led a wrestling clinic in Inez, drawing participation from four local high schools. The event provided athletes with an opportunity to learn from someone who has competed at the highest level, wrestling in 27 countries across six continents.

Despite his global experience, Gruenwald shared a personal perspective that resonated with many.

He described himself as more of a homebody, while acknowledging that his calling has taken him far beyond that comfort zone.

“For someone who prefers being at home,” he said, “Christ clearly has me where I need to be.”

That perspective is what made his presence so impactful. His mission is to develop better wrestlers and to help young men and women understand that there is more to life than just being here—that there is a purpose bigger than the moment.

On the mat, Gruenwald’s skillset and efficiency were evident throughout the clinic. He offered valuable insight to a Martin County Cardinals team that is already building momentum. Coming off a state runner-up finish, the Cardinals have their sights set on bigger goals next season.

Martin County head coach Josh Muncy said the visit came at the right time.

“This is exactly what our team needed,” Muncy said. “Not only are our athletes learning folkstyle, but they’re also learning Greco and freestyle at the highest level from a master technician.”

Gruenwald also used the weekend to stress discipline, perspective and purpose alongside the work on the mat.
