PEACH ORCHARD — A Tomahawk man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in Lawrence County in what deputies said was a burglary.

Jerry Lee Maynard, 45, was shot by the property owner. A second burglary suspect, Green Ramey, 42, of Louisa, was arrested on a second-degree burglary charge.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office responded at 6:20 a.m. to reports of shots fired in a possible burglary in the Peach Orchard community. Deputies found Maynard’s body in a wooded area.

Police said witnesses reported the property owner tracked Maynard and Ramey into the woods after he caught them burglarizing a building on his land. The property owner was carrying a gun, and Maynard disarmed him. As the two struggled over the gun, it discharged the fatal shot.

The Lawrence County coroner pronounced Maynard dead at the scene.

Police obtained a warrant for Ramey and arrested him without incident later Tuesday.

Green Ramey

Ramey remains incarcerated at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
