SOAR creates student relief fund

In the coming weeks and months, students in flood-ravaged communities in Eastern Kentucky will face significant challenges as they return to the classroom. Once immediate crisis and cleanup needs are met, important secondary gaps will arise that will impact a student’s ability to succeed in the classroom.

To help overcome these barriers, SOAR (Shaping Our Appalachian Region) has created the Eastern Kentucky Student Support Fund. One hundred percent of donations will go directly towards filling student needs.

Low-income students faced significant hurdles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Without targeted assistance, these students could fall further behind as a result of damage to schools and homes caused by floods.

Working directly with school districts and family resource centers, the Eastern Kentucky Student Support Fund will support improved living conditions and student needs such as:

School supplies

  • Household appliances
  • Bedding
  • Computers/Laptops/Chromebooks
  • Internet
  • Rental assistance
  • Gas cards for transportation to and from school
  • Other needs as they arise and are communicated by school districts

Students eligible for the Student Relief Fund must attend a K-12 school in a county in a FEMA-declared disaster area.

Students must apply for assistance through school districts and family resource centers.
