LOUISA — A Martin County man was taken into custody Saturday after authorities say he set a motorcycle on fire along U.S. 23 in Lawrence County.

Adam A. Maynard, 41, of Pilgrim, faces charges of willfully setting, throwing or placing any device to set fire and possession of a controlled substance, first degree, first offense (methamphetamine).

Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to U.S. 23 following a report of a man threatening to set his motorcycle on fire. While en route to the scene, dispatch notified the officers of an active motorcycle fire.

Upon arrival, deputies said they began searching for the person responsible for the fire. They located Maynard within a mile of the scene.

When asked whether the motorcycle belonged to him, Maynard allegedly told deputies that they could not prove it was his.

Maynard also allegedly told police that he used a sock and a cigarette lighter to start the blaze. He reportedly said he was trying to keep the motorcycle from being stolen.

During a pat-down of Maynard, deputies located a pill holder containing a substance that Maynard allegedly identified as methamphetamine, along with three syringes.

Deputies noted that the fire had spread to a nearby hillside and that the fire department had to extinguish it.

Maynard was transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where he remained Tuesday under a $5,000 cash bond.

Editor’s note: All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
