WARFIELD — Warfield Elementary School celebrated its fourth-grade scientists at the 2026 WES Science Fair, recognizing winners and participants for their hard work, creativity and dedication to the scientific process.

The gymnasium was transformed into rows of colorful tri-fold boards as students presented projects covering chemistry, physics, biology, engineering and animal behavior. Staff and judges moved from table to table, listening as students explained their hypotheses, procedures and conclusions.

Students competed in three categories: Earth Science, Life Science and Physical Science.

In Earth Science, Brently Baisden earned first place, followed by Jayson Maier in second and Emily Trout in third.

Life Science honors went to Nova Mays, who placed first. Jasmine Shaffer earned second place and Daniel James finished third.

In Physical Science, Jackson Ray claimed first place. Elijah Dove placed second and Brylee Mullins finished third.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Jocelynn Jackson and Hunter Burchett.

Jackson Ray was the overall winner of the 2026 WES Science Fair. He will advance to compete in the Big Sandy Regional Science Fair.

Among the projects showcased, students tested whether sugar crystals grow faster in tap water or distilled water, explored plant propagation without seeds and examined why whitetail bucks shed their antlers each year. Others investigated oxidation in “The Green Penny,” compared seed counts among different apple varieties and studied how turbine blade design affects hydroelectric power output.

Hands-on demonstrations were a highlight of the event. A lemon volcano illustrated chemical reactions, rubber band-powered cars showed the conversion of potential energy to motion and a pressure-based rocket project demonstrated the forces behind liftoff. Students also explored whether dogs use logic when solving problems and how holograms can create the illusion of three-dimensional images.

School officials extended special thanks to Mrs. Della Preston for her hard work and support in organizing another successful Science Fair at Warfield Elementary.
