Martin County closes season with 82-72 win at Shelby Valley

PIKEVILLE — Martin County closed the regular season Feb. 18 with an 82-72 road win at Shelby Valley.

Coach Jason “JJ” James’ Cardinals shot 29-of-61 from the field (47.5%), connected on 16-of-39 from 3-point range (41%) and went 8-of-10 at the free-throw line in an offensive effort powered by big performances from Devan Maynard, Eli Mills and Bryson Dials.

Maynard delivered the most dominant stat line of the night. He posted a monster double-double with 17 points and 21 rebounds. The senior added five assists, two steals and three blocks. His 21 boards accounted for the bulk of Martin County’s 32 team rebounds.

Maynard was highly efficient offensively. He hit 8-of-9 from 2-point range and 8-of-12 overall while controlling the paint on both ends.

Dials also turned in a double-double and orchestrated the Martin County offense with 18 points and 10 assists to go with two rebounds and a steal. He knocked down five 3-pointers on 5-of-10 shooting from deep and finished 6-of-13 from the field overall.

Mills led Martin County in scoring with 20 points and caught fire from long range, burying six 3-pointers on 6-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc. He also went 2-of-2 at the free-throw line and added an assist.

Braxton Keathley added 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, finishing a perfect 4-of-4 at the line.

Chase Hinkle contributed eight points and two rebounds on 3-of-5 shooting, including 2-of-4 from deep. Alan Moore scored four points on a perfect 2-of-2 shooting night from 2-point range.
