MONTICELLO — Sophie Harless caught fire from deep as Martin County’s defense slammed the door late on Clinton County 57-54 in the Wayne County Valentine’s Day Shootout in Monticello Feb. 14.

Martin County trailed for most of the afternoon, down 15-12 after the first quarter, 34-28 at halftime and 54-45 after three quarters. The Lady Cards flipped the script in the fourth, held Clinton County scoreless and ripped off a 12-0 run to steal the win.

Harless delivered the biggest blows in the final period. She hit two 3-pointers in the fourth and gave Martin County the spark it needed to climb back into it and move in front.

Harless buried six 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. She shot 6-for-9 from the field and added three assists.

Maci Maynard anchored the comeback with a monster double-double – 16 points and 16 rebounds – along with four assists and three blocks. She controlled the glass and protected the rim as the Lady Cards clamped down late.

Makenna Marcum added 13 points with three assists and two steals.

Annaleigh Davis scored six points and added two steals and two assists. Chloe May finished with four points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks as Martin County leaned on stops and timely shooting to close out the three-point win.
