PRESTONSBURG — Martin County played Saturday in the MountainTop Soccerama at Prestonsburg High School and came home with some wins.
Each team got to play three 20-minute games. Coach Steven Gauze thought his team played well.
“I use these games to try different player combinations and formations and to gauge fitness. I’m happy with how we played,” said Gauze.
“I thought we moved the ball well on offense. Defensively they worked hard, not giving up any goals all day. There’s still a lot of work to do, but I’m pretty happy with the team’s performance.”
Sophie McCoy led all scoring with three goals, Laura Hale had two and Caitlyn Horn notched one.
The team also had a camp in Inez this summer.
“I have worked with Coach Pazo in the past and like his coaching style. He pushes the kids to work but teaches them the whole time,” said Gauze. “We discuss what the team needs to work on and he focuses on those topics during camp. It’s physically demanding on the girls, but they have a lot of fun. It’s a good way to kick off our season,” said Coach Gauze.
The Lady Cards will play Aug. 9 at East Carter. Their first home match will be Aug. 16against Pike Central.
