Martin County put together a 2-1 week from Jan. 13–17, weathering a road loss to Floyd Central before taking wins over Magoffin County and Pineville behind two double-doubles from Maci Maynard.
The stretch opened Jan. 13 with a 70-52 loss at Floyd Central, a game where the Lady Cards flat out shot the ball well but could not cash in enough at the stripe. Martin County hit 20 of 41 from the field (48.8%), buried three 3-balls on nine tries (33.3%), and went 9-for-17 at the free-throw line (52.9%) while grabbing 32 rebounds.
Maynard poured in 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting and went 5-for-7 at the line while grabbing 10 rebounds and contributing three assists. Chloe May finished with 11 points with a shot from deep and grabbed seven boards. The senior delivered three dimes. Makenna Marcum tallied eight points on 4-of-7 from two-point range. She secured five rebounds and helped four of her teammates score. Annaleigh Davis finished with seven points with a trey, collected five rebounds and dished out three assists. Sophie Harless hit a shot from downtown and grabbed three rebounds. Desirae Gullett rounded out the stat line with two rebounds.
Martin County answered Jan. 16 with a 57th District win over Magoffin County by a score of 57-37.
Davis and Maynard each fired in 19 points to lead the Lady Cards. Davis racked up her 19 on 6-of-9 shooting inside the arc and buried two threes. She had two assists in the win. Maynard was automatic in the paint, finishing 7-for-8 on two-pointers and going 5-for-7 at the stripe. She capped her double-double with 10 boards off the glass and added three assists to her stat line. Marcum notched 11 points and was money at the line by going 7-for-8 on free throws. The eighth-grader filled the stat sheet after she collected six rebounds, snatched five steals and dished out four assists. Harless finished with six points, two assists and 10 rebounds in the paint. May finished with two points and grabbed five rebounds. Gullett added one rebound.
The Lady Cards wrapped up the stretch Jan. 17 with a 49-35 win over Pineville at South Laurel in the Roy Bowling Classic. May flashed brightly and was named Player of the Game by event staff.
Martin County came out of the gate and set the tone early, leading 10-7 after one quarter, stretching it to 27-16 at halftime, and punching the margin to 44-26 by the end of the third on the way to the winning cause.
May poured in 14 points and buried three 3-pointers in the second quarter. Marcum matched her with 14 points and tickled the twine twice from 3-point range. Maynard finished with 10 points, Davis canned eight and Harless chipped in two.
