KERMIT, W.Va. — Kermit ushered in the holiday season Friday night as families turned out for Christmas in the Park, a celebration of lights, music and community spirit despite the cold.

The night opened with a parade and continued with inflatables, a mechanical bull and mechanical reindeer, Santa and Mrs. Claus, refreshments, a Christmas story and an exceptional performance by the Able Families After-School Program children.

“Although it was quite cold, there was an abundance of love and excitement amongst those who came out,” Councilwoman Tammy Preece Hodge said.

Hodge offered special thanks to Mayor Charles Sparks, Logan Preece and the KVFD, along with Marlene Spaulding and her ABLE Families staff.

“The kids’ song was absolutely beautiful and brought a warm feeling to all,” she said.

Her thanks also extended to Mrs. Doris Asbury, a beloved longtime resident who had the honor of flipping the switch to light the town’s Christmas tree.

“We truly hope you enjoyed the evening,” Hodge said. “Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2026 is our wish for all.”

Mayor Sparks echoed her appreciation, adding recognition for town employees Rhonda Muncy and Dorothy Stacy for decorating Town Hall.

“I can’t say enough about our great employees,” he said. “It looks amazing.”

Sparks also praised Brandon Hall for decorating the park, the intersection, the gym and Town Hall. “He and Dean Crank even decorated the caboose this year,” the mayor said.

He added Jaimie Chapman, Brian Fitzgerald and Charlie Parsley to his list. “Every one of them has worked and put a lot of time into making the town beautiful,” Sparks said. “A big thank-you to each and every one of you.”
