Susie Meek
1947—2025
Susie Meek, 78, was called home to her eternal resting place Monday, Nov. 17, 2025. She spent her final days surrounded by her family and their love.
Susie was the daughter of the late John and Dovie Music. She was born in the Appalachian Mountains, in Inez, Sept. 2, 1947.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Billy Ray Music, and her sister, Hester Horn.
Susie graduated from Warfield High School (Martin County) in 1965. She married Roger Meek (Tomahawk) in April 1971. Early in their marriage, the couple lived in San Antonio, Texas, Tomahawk, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1986, Roger, Sue and their children moved to Greenville, South Carolina. With the help of family and close friends, they successfully ran Bramlett Insurance Agency for 36 years.
Sue spent many years actively involved in the community of Greenville, South Carolina. She spent countless hours volunteering with Carolina High School’s Booster Club and PTA, as well as multiple committees for Salem United Methodist Church. She also volunteered as a Guardian Ad Litem for the Department of Social Services.
Sue cared deeply for the welfare of our communities and was a diligent advocate for the rights and betterment of those less fortunate. Sue met President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, when he declared the “War on Poverty” in her hometown of Inez, in Martin County. Coincidentally, Roger was also standing on the same street that day, years before they actually met.
Sue was known for her deep love and fierce protection of those closest to her. She always maintained the ability to bring smiles and laughter to any situation she faced. Her sharp wit and sense of humor remained until her very last days.
Sue is survived by her husband, Roger Dean Meek; son, Steven Kenneth Meek; daughter, Stephanie Rae Meek; grandchildren, Benjamin, Jonathan and Emelia Ballenger; and their father, William Ballenger (Greenville, South Carolina). She will be lovingly missed by her sisters-in-law, Peggy Osborne (Paintsville), Carrie Loudin (Anderson, South Carolina), Patty Granstrom (Columbus, Ohio) and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins (preceded in death by her niece, Brittney Renee Pinson (Beauty) and nephews, Michael Dean Osborne (Paintsville) and Shon David Loudin (Anderson, South Carolina). An honorable mention is given to Sue’s childhood best friend, Linda Pumphries (Lexington) and longtime best friend, Linda Johnson, along with Linda’s husband, Andy, their sons, Kevin (and her goddaughter, Savannah of Mecklenburg, Germany, and Tyson) and Colin, and their late daughter, Karin Ashe-Taylor (Greenville, South Carolina).
Services were held Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025, at Union Grove United Methodist Church, 3332 US-29, Belton, South Carolina.
