WARFIELD — Martin County Middle School’s varsity boys made a late push but came up just short in a 34-31 home loss to Millard on Nov. 6.
The teams were locked in a defensive battle early, tied 3-3 after the first quarter and 11-11 at halftime. Millard gained separation in the third, outscoring the Cardinals to take a 24-15 lead into the final period.
Martin County caught fire in the fourth, outscoring Millard 16-10 behind a balanced scoring effort. The rally fell just short as the visitors held on for the three-point win.
Brayden Hammond led the Cardinals with nine points. Kooper Sturgill and Chucky Leonard each fired in seven points. Grayson Mollette scored five and Mayson Phillips chipped in three.

In the junior varsity contest, Millard defeated Martin County 47-15. Hunter Phelps paced the Cardinals with eight points, followed by Jonah McCoy with five and Zander Sammons with two.
