INEZ — A Debord man was taken into custody Tuesday evening after allegedly assaulting a woman and threatening law enforcement on East Main Street.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, 44-year-old Millard Newsome was arrested Oct. 8 and charged with first-degree disorderly conduct, second-degree assault and third-degree terroristic threatening.

Deputy J.C. Kirk responded to a complaint that Newsome was “in a fist fight” with a female at a residence on East Main Street. When officers arrived, they found the woman behind the residence. She told police she had managed to escape through the back door.

Kirk reported that the woman had blood on her face and a knot on her head. She alleged that Newsome struck her with a coffee mug before she fought back to get away. Witnesses at the scene corroborated her account, according to authorities.

Kirk stated that Newsome continued to shout profanities in public, causing alarm. “He said he would pay someone to whip her [explicit],” the deputy wrote in his report. “Subject also threatened to bust me in the face.”

The arrest occurred at approximately 6:14 p.m.
