INEZ — A Lovely man went to jail Oct. 2 after allegedly making a drug transaction outside the courtroom in the Martin County Judicial Center, authorities said.
It was just after 3:30 p.m. when court security officers noticed something unusual on the surveillance feed. Outside the courtroom, 49-year-old Amos Ray Evans appeared to be handing over cash.
Martin County Sheriff John Kirk arrived moments later and confronted Evans. According to the police report, Evans denied anything illicit had taken place but the sheriff’s search told a different story.
Inside Evans’s watch pocket, Kirk found a receipt wrapped around a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine.
Evans was charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).
