This and that—a few random thoughts

Have you noticed the new drug commercials on TV? They advertise a certain medication for an illness or problem some may suffer from. But at the end of every commercial, they quickly spew out the long list of possible side effects. Some could even end in “death.” No thanks, I think I will pass on taking that!

… Which reminds me of a joke I recently heard. “I asked my pharmacist for a cure for procrastination. He gave me a prescription… but I still haven’t filled it.”

… Does anyone enjoy trying to fold fitted sheets? This may be the toughest task anyone has to do when it comes to keeping their home tidy and neat.

… Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will clean them? I doubt there is a chance that will happen.

… Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii? I’m just asking. And since we are talking about roads, why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?

… A friend told me he had a photographic memory but never developed it.

… Why is a boxing ring square? And why isn’t it a boxing square? It makes you think.

… Why is there an expiration date on sour cream? I am just asking for a friend.

… If aliens landed on Earth tomorrow and offered to take you home with them, would you go? I might go for a ride if they promised to bring me back to Earth!

… I think most of us like the autumn season. Especially when the leaves on the trees start turning red, orange and yellow. The cooler temperatures are nice too. This comes after a very hot and humid summer.

The only negative is what follows fall. Winter comes with shorter days, more cloudy days and of course colder temperatures. I don’t think we are ever satisfied with the weather.

… Although Trick-or-Treat (Halloween) candy has been on display for a while at most stores, why buy it now? Because it will surely be eaten before the end of October, you will have to go purchase more. I guess these marketing folks know what they are doing.

… Some things related to sports, because this is how my complex mind works.

College football fans in this area are having a tough year. The three main teams that people follow in this region, Kentucky, West Virginia and Marshall are not having good seasons.

At the time I wrote this, all three lost on Saturday. UK was 2-3, WVU 2-4 and MU 2-3, and none of them achieving wins in their individual conferences.

It looks like it will be a long, hard season and tough on fans of the Wildcats, Mountaineers and Thundering Herd. Hey, it won’t be long until basketball season starts!

… On the other hand, many high school teams in this area that we follow are having great seasons so far. Martin County is 6-1 and is having a great season. Tug Valley is 2-2 but is expected to get on a winning streak after a slower start than last year. Mingo Central was undefeated at 6-0 at the time this column was penned and Belfry was 6-1. All four of these schools are ranked and should make some noise in the postseason.

… Many baseball fans in this region follow the Cincinnati Reds. They have had an up-and-down year under first-year manager Terry Francona. They went to the final game of the 162 on the schedule to decide their fate as far as making the playoffs.

The Reds beat the Brewers 2-of-3 in the last weekend of the season. They ended up tied with the New York Mets with a record of 83-79, as both teams lost on the final Sunday of the year. However Cincinnati held the tiebreaker for beating the Mets in more games in the regular season. So, they secured the final wild-card playoff spot in the National League.

They did not fare too well against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round, but at least it is a step in the right direction.

Until next time
