BETSY LAYNE — Martin County hit the road Friday night and wasted no time quieting the home crowd. Behind a relentless ground attack and a defense that stuffed the Bobcats run game, the Cardinals rolled to a 48–18 victory over Betsy Layne.

The Cardinals (2-1) struck quickly in the first quarter, building a 14–6 lead. They blew the game open with a 21-point second quarter that left the Bobcats reeling from a 35-12 deficit. After three, Martin County was in full control 48-12. Even as Betsy Layne scraped together a late touchdown in the fourth, the outcome was never in doubt.

Running back Crayson “Bones” Lafferty carried the load. The junior rushed 18 times for 164 yards and four touchdowns, plowing through tacklers and breaking free for big gains.

Quarterback Devan Maynard turned in a complete performance. The senior carried nine times for 173 yards and two scores while throwing for 122 yards and a touchdown.

Maynard spread the wealth through the air, connecting with seven different receivers. Liam Fields (Jr.) hauled in two passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Jerrod Haney (Jr.) added a 20-yard reception and also completed a pass to Maynard for 9 yards. Sophomore Chase Hinkle caught one ball for 19 yards, Gavin Stepp (Sr.) had one for 13, Maynard added a 9-yard grab of his own, Rex Ward (Jr.) pulled in one for 8, and Jonothan Cline (Jr.) caught two for 6 yards.

The ground game also featured freshman Dillion Daniel with 39 yards on six carries to keep the chains moving as the Cardinals closed out drives.

Special teams played steady with Sebastian Genovese (Jr.) converting six of seven extra-point attempts (85.7%), adding six points to the total.

With 507 all-purpose yards and four different players putting points on the board, Martin County showed it is built to dominate on both sides of the ball.

In all, Lafferty scored four touchdowns (24 points), Maynard landed two (12 points), Fields contributed a touchdown grab (six points), and Genovese brought steady kicking (six points).

Defensively, Martin County clamped down on Betsy Layne’s rushing attack, holding the Bobcats to just 99 yards on the ground. The secondary limited damage through the air, giving up only 124 passing yards and preventing big plays.

Martin County will look to continue the winning momentum this Friday in the Harvest Bowl against Knox Central (1-2) at 7:30 p.m. at The Rock. The game will also serve as Homecoming for the Cardinals.
